"Although I had physical limitation, this did not stop me from doing anything including serving GOD. I was not concerned about earthly things, but focused on doing things that would be of eternal value."

ABOUT WALTER E. MONTGOMERY
The Walter E. Montgomery Scholarship Fund was created to honor the memory of our friend Walter Montgomery, who grew up on a sharecroppers farm in Lexington, Mississippi. Being the middle child of ten siblings, Walter spent most days working the land. Mississippi farming life was very hard, and there was very little time to spend learning to read and write. Walter was illiterate.
When Walter turned thirteen, he escaped from the farm to the bright lights of Chicago. Fifteen years later at the age of twenty eight, Walter was struck in the spine by a stray bullet and paralyzed from the waist down. Now a paraplegic, Walter became depressed and resigned himself to living his dreams from the seat of a wheelchair. After years of feeling sorry for himself and no longer resigned about “...living a useless life,” Walter, now forty; reentered school barely able to read or write. And in two years time received his GED. He then went on to graduate with honors on the Dean’s List with an Associates Degree in Information Technology from Oakland Community College.
Through all of Walter’s struggles and life’s adversities, he never gave up and as a result gained a whole new life of freedom and a deeper appreciation for his revived Christian faith. Throughout his later years, he became active in his community and church. He was lay minister and his story became inspiration to all he met. Walter didn't allow his physical limitation to deter him from giving his all. He passed away August 9, 2017 knowing God’s love and the love of all who had the privilege of calling him FRIEND.
